The 2 Colt collectors send heated water to the heat exchange tank in the basement. This is a closed loop system using a glycol solution to prevent freezing. Preheated water goes into existing hot water heater. Previous owner states that they never ran out of hot water, even with family of 5 (3 boys); during the summer nearly all hot water comes from the solar system. In winter, system still preheats water to over 100 degrees thus reducing work load on existing hot water heater.
Original system was installed in early 80's, and updated over 10 years ago. No breakdowns, no problems during lifetime of system.

The project saw the conversion of a 1920's detached garage into an art studio. This involved expanding the footprint four feet to the East, and a two foot by six foot addition at the Southwest which supports a new loft space. The space is designed to be naturally ventilated and employed daylighting strategies to illuminate task areas. The slab floor and foundation utilize nearly half recycled fly ash content, and the TPO roof membrane is covered with four inches of soil and sedum plants on a 6:12 pitched roof.
