This building features a grid-connected photovoltaic system that will make the site a “net energy producing site”. Building is designed for 8.8kW photovoltaic system of 130w Astropower APX technology modules, W2 2500 watt SMA's invertors. The system, funded by Seattle City Light, is being installed in two phases with an initial installation of (40) panels producing 5.2kW, intended to demonstrate the potential of harvesting natural resources in the spirit of the Gardens themselves. The building is exclusively daylit with electric lights for nighttime use and an on-demand electric hot water heater – Powerstar PS19T. The green screen on the west end of the building is constructed of locally produced recycled high-density polyethylene, made from #2 recycled plastics including grocery bags, plastic milk jugs, water bottles, etc. The meeting room is framed using engineered lumber ( LVL’s). The interior finish in the meeting room is Dakota Burl, manufactured from sunflower hulls, a renewable agricultural fiber by-product. The large red doors and roof decking are FSC certified lumber, sustainably harvested. The 1700 square foot roof is designed to collect water and Phase II will include (3) 2500 gallon water storage tanks for use by the gardeners with overflow directed to the existing pond.
