Description:
This residence is being remodeled and landscaped for a better tomorrow for everyone. In addition to the solar water heating system, old carpeting has been replaced by Oregon White Oak and finished with OSMO Hard Wax oil. In the kitchen, vinyl is being replaced with Marmoleum brand linoleum, but, old cabinets will remain until they start to fall apart. After removing wall paper in the kitchen, the sheetrock underneath was patched instead of torn out, reducing landfill waste. I have replaced old water-intensive toilets with 0.8/1.6 dual-flush toilets. Outside, the landscaping is a work in progress: I have removed cherry laurel, holly, St. John’s wort, and ivy, all invasive non-native plants. In their place, I have installed raised beds for growing organic vegetable and fruit and landscaped with native plants, including native prairie species that are local butterfly-friendly. Weeds in the lawn are removed with gloves and tools or killed by suffocation. I do not water the lawn. I also hope to have a clothesline installed in time for the tour. Future projects include replacing carpet on the staircase with wool carpet and the carpet in the upstairs of the house and refinishing the fir that is underneath.
